German Castles
Pfalzgrafenstein - near Kaub
This castle was built by Ludwig, Count
Palatine of Bavaria, and is situated on rock in the middle
of the Rhine River. It was used to collect customs duty from
boats plying the waters.
It features a pentagonal curtain wall and
was built to resemble a ship. It is an unusual example of
military architecture and adds to the unique character of
the surrounding landscape.
