Italian Castles
Castelvecchio
- Verona
This medieval castle with its fortified
bridge was begun in the mid-14th century and dominates a strategic
passage on the River Adige. The bridge still serves as a main
road over the river, and this road effectively divides the
castle into two separate sections.
The bridge tower and castle walls were
constructed of red brick, with lighter material used to highlight
the wall walks and merlons. The bridge was destroyed in the
final year of WWII, but has been restored using as much of
the original materials as possible.
