Eilean Donan Castle - Ross and Cromarty

Eilean Donan castle has a rich history and is one of the most romantic castles to be found anywhere. This medieval castle was built during the reign of King Alexander II to provide defense against 13th century Viking raids.

No enemy was able to take Eilean Donan's strong keep during the violent early years of Scotland's history. Government warships attacked the castle in 1719, and the ruins remained abandoned until restorations were started in the 1900s. This castle is the seat of the Clan MacRae, and was featured in the original "Highlander" movie.
