Scottish Castles
Palace of Holyroodhouse - Midlothian
This medieval palace is the official seat
of the reigning Scottish monarch, and dates back to the early
Middle Ages. This grand structure began as a simple Augustinian
monastery founded in 1128.
Holyroodhouse's oldest structures date
back to the 1500s and are surrounded by a rectangular bailey.
Between 1561 and 1567, Mary, Queen of Scots lived here, and
successive monarchs have made this palace the premier residence
for Scottish royalty.
